How I Permanently Lost Weight by Triggering My Metabolism
It was in fact, a breakthrough moment in my life. I was 30 and it was like I just started a new life.
Before I discovered this hack, I was always leaving in constant fear of developing complications related to excess body fat. It all started in secondary school when my Biology teacher taught us how to calculate body mass index (BMI), which is a rule of thumb used to broadly categorise a person as underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese, based on tissue mass and height. After finding out that mine was 29.6 kg/m2 (out of the normal range of 18.5–25), a value that fell in the overweight range, and very close to the obese value, it sparked my interest in weight loss.
It didn’t take me long to discover that some of the health issues I have been having were due to the fact that I was overweight. I was already suffering from sleep apnea, joint pains, and my blood pressure was slightly higher than normal. At that moment, I realised that I had to do something to tackle not only my health complications, but also improve on my physical appearance.
The next question I asked myself was what I could do to solve my overweight problem. I just started doing what other overweight people around me were doing; I started starving myself, deleted many things from my diet, started eating some new ones, going to the gym, jogging regularly and so on. My lifestyle changed completely and I discovered that I was really straining myself. ‘Control your diet and exercise regularly’ is a common statement; very easy to say but hard to execute.
Upon all the effort I put in, the results I got were not encouraging. At times, I lost some kg but the results were small and temporal. I started asking myself if I was doing the right thing. I gave up completely and decided to try something different and not just do what everybody else was doing.
I got more interested about how and why people become overweight. I found out that It is but normal that our bodies can store excess unused calories in the form of fat. Weight gain is simply an imbalance between calories intake and calories used by the body. It was obvious to me at that point that I was overweight because my body could not use all the calories I consumed.
I had to answer the next question: Why are all the calories I consumed not used up by my body?
· Is it because I don’t exercise regularly or do enough exercise?
· is it because I eat too much?
· it is because I eat the wrong foods?
I could not convince myself that the stubborn fat I my body was a result of any of the above because;
ü I just gave up from a regular exercise and gym program that I engaged myself for over a year and it didn’t help.
ü I just gave up from cutting on my diet drastically for over a year and yet I was still overweight.
ü I just gave up from sacrificing a lot of my favourite dishes and going in for new low calorie diets and still, it didn’t help that much.
I continued searching for more weight lose methods. I watched a lot of videos on YouTube, followed weight loss accounts on Instagram and read books about weight loss. In the course, of this, I came across a page which talked about metabolism and how it influences the development of stubborn fat in the body. Metabolism is the internal process by which our body burns calories and expends energy. Some people complain how they keep gaining weight no matter how little they eat. It is because these group of people have a slow metabolism. A slow metabolism burns fewer calories, which means more get stored as fat in the body. That’s why some people have difficulty losing weight by just cutting calories. A fast metabolism burns calories at a quicker rate, which explains why some people can eat a lot and not gain extra pounds.
I also came across a publication by Paolo Piaggi, titled ‘Metabolic determinants of weight gain in humans’. In this publication, he talks about the role of metabolism in weight gain and concludes that a better understanding of the metabolic differences among individuals may lead to individualized therapies for preventing or treating weight gain by identifying subjects at risk on the basis of each person’s metabolic phenotype and susceptibility to obesity. From this publication and others, I came to understand that some people actually gain weight and have stubborn fat in their bodies just because of the fact that they have low metabolism.
At that juncture, I asked myself some questions
· I am a victim of low metabolism?
· Is my being overweight, a result of the fact that I am suffering from low metabolism?
· If the answers to the above questions is ‘yes’, what is the best method to solve this problem?
It didn’t take me long to land to another site on the internet where I found out that people are actually being treated of the overweight problems by simply triggering their metabolism.
